Sergey's Interpretation of Charles' Legendary KMP22 Design -- The Russian KMP Flipper
(I can't say it any better, so I am going to reprint the detailed info from the Shirogorov Knives Official Group Facebook Page)
"We are happy to introduce our new collaboration project. This time it is a collab with Charles Marlowe, who is a globally acclaimed knifemaker with over 25 years of experience in the industry. Marlowe's knives are renowned for their minimalistic design, compactness and practicality, making them beloved by both collectors and everyday users.
We've named our project RKMP, and it is based on KMP22 that is one of Charles’s Marlowe most recognizable models. Traditionally, Sergey Shirogorov has significantly refined the model, retaining its familiar look while at the same time making a number of changes to the design. It’s worth mentioning that RKMP had already been highly recognized both by the global knife community at the Blade Show 2025 that took places this summer in Atlanta, and as well by the panel of judges at the show who awarded this model as Knife Collaboration of the Year.
RKMP is a compact framelock with a 90mm (3.55in) blade. Being slightly larger than the original Marlowe model, it features a thin blade and deep milled pockets inside the handle, both of which contribute to making it a lightweight folder. Charles’s Marlowe concept accurately blends elements of turtle anatomy into the knife’s design. The blade, with its pronounced swedge, mirrors the animal’s fore flipper, while the handle’s angular shape echoes the pointed shell of a carapace. This fusion of form and function is further accentuated by the knife’s sleek lines and dynamic curves, coupled with its robust titanium frame and backspacer, which ensure both strength and light weight.
Drop point-shaped blade features a large swedge that runs almost the entire length of the spine. The blade's resemblance to a turtle's flipper is largely due to the unique shape of this swedge. The blade is made out of M398, Bohler-Uddeholm steel well-known for its durability and corrosion resistance. Flat primary bevels coupled with 3mm (0.12in) blade thickness at its spine ensure effective cutting performance. In the RKMP design, the line between the swedge, primary bevels and flats seamlessly transitions into the line running along the handle scales. The blade's spine ascends steadily, thinning out as it rises, then getting thicker again toward the tip of the blade, thus enhancing its strength. The blade comes in a duo-tone finish: the primary bevels together with the swedge feature the more practical stonewash, while the flats and flipper tab both come with satin finish. Both sides of the satin flats boast etched logos - Shirogorov Knives’s on one side, and Charles Marlowe’s on the other side. The RKMP’s distinctive flipper tab fits into overall design of the knife and echoes the handle scales with its angular ledges. The flipper tab design incorporates a finger choil that provides a comfortable place to rest your finger for extra control for finer cutting tasks, while the jimping enhances grip during flipping action.
Unlike the Marlowe model, RKMP body screws have been removed from the show side, with the exception of the pivot screw that comes with a faux slit. This allows the titanium handle to appear sleek, with focus on clean lines of textures, complex contouring and milling. The handle has recesses along the perimeter, set around the smooth central area, and additional texture that enhances both its appearance and grip. RKMP may appear angular, but it fits perfectly in hand. The ledge of the scales near the pivot is further pronounced by the flipper tab when the blade is deployed. The rear part near the pocket clip fits in between the little finger and ring finger. The thickness of the handle is only 11.5mm (0.45in) however thanks to the wide profile and chamfering the handle fills the hands comfortably. For ease of closing the knife the show-side scale comes with a milled recess relative to the lockbar side, while the lockbar itself features fine milling in the area where your thumb lands when disengaging the lock. The titanium backspacer features a pattern of three lines anodized blue that run along its top surface. The handle features a lanyard hole, which seamlessly goes through the scales and the backspacer. On the lockbar side a body screw holds the handle scales together securely.
The pocket clip has undergone significant changes, almost to the point of being a completely new design for the RKMP model. It is made out of titanium and comes with a recess and texture on its lower side while boasting a chaotic satin finish of the primary surface. Being rather compact in size it is rather sturdy, thus to ease pocketing the knife deep milling has been made in the lock bar relief area.
The knife weighs 102 grams (3.6oz) thanks to the complex internal skeletonization. We can proudly say that RKMP stands out with its original engineering aesthetics inside, featuring both texture in the milled pockets and chaotic satin finish over the outline surface – the latter a match to the finish on the pocket clip. The pivot comes with SRRBS Single-Row Roller Bearing System, with steel cages on hardened underlays – at this point a fine tradition for our collabs with international knifemakers.
That's how our new collab came out - the RKMP folder, emerging as a fusion of a distinctive animalistic design by Charles Marlowe and cutting-edge technical workmanship by Shirogorov Knives.
Total run is limited to 150 pcs."
