THE ROLEX SEA-DWELLER
Black Dial and Red Name
The dial is the distinctive face of a Rolex watch, the feature most responsible for its identity and readability. Characterised by hour markers fashioned from 18 ct gold to prevent tarnishing, every Rolex dial is designed and manufactured in-house, largely by hand to ensure perfection. The dial carries the name Sea-Dweller in red, a reference to the first model.
CERAMIC BEZEL AND LUMINESCENT DISPLAY
The 60-minute graduated, unidirectional rotatable bezel of the Sea-Dweller enables divers to precisely and safely monitor their dive and decompression times. It is equipped with a patented black Cerachrom bezel insert manufactured by Rolex in a virtually scratchproof ceramic whose color is unaffected by ultraviolet rays. The graduation is coated via PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) with a thin layer of platinum. The dial features large Chromalight hour markers and hands, fitted with luminescent material that emits a long-lasting blue glow for excellent legibility in dark conditions.
THE OYSTER BRACELET
The Sea-Dweller’s solid-link Oyster bracelet in Oystersteel is fitted with an Oysterlock safety clasp that prevents accidental opening. A double extension system allows adjustments to be made without the use of tools, so that the watch can be worn comfortably over a diving suit up to 7 mm thick.
THE OYSTER CASE
The Sea-Dweller’s Oyster case, guaranteed waterproof to a depth of 1,220 meters (4,000 feet), is a paragon of robustness. Its characteristically shaped middle case is crafted from a solid block of, particularly corrosion-resistant Oystersteel. Its fluted case back is hermetically screwed down with a special tool that allows only Rolex watchmakers to access the movement.
TRIPLOCK WINDING CROWN
The Triplock winding crown is a patented triple waterproofness system designed especially for divers’ watches. Developed by Rolex, it resists water pressure to depths of 300 meters (1,000 feet) on the Submariner models and some other Professional models, and 3,900 meters (12,800 feet) on the Rolex Deepsea. First introduced in 1970, the Triplock system consists of 10 different elements crafted from the most reliable materials. The winding crown screws down against the Oyster case as tightly and hermetically as a submarine’s hatch.
